At the lowest point in the economic crisis affecting the great majority of the oppressed masses, workers, peasants, indigenous people, and youth and amid the third wave of Covid-19 that is killing 500 people each day, Colombian president Iván Duque decided to intensify his attacks on the masses with his tax reform. But the response was a forceful mass protest that eventually led him to back down and withdraw the plan after five days of protests in almost every city in the country.

Protests broke out across Colombia this week, including a general strike that brought thousands of workers into the streets of cities all across the country. These protests are the latest wave in an upsurge of class struggle that began in November 2019.

The recent elections in Ecuador show a new political phenomenon arising from the rejection of the most reactionary aspects of recent politics in the country. Yaku Pérez, who may make it into the second round of the presidential vote, is far from a genuine Left alternative.

Venezuela is facing a brutal shortage of gasoline, but the U.S. is threatening to block badly needed shipments of oil from Iran. Venezuela has every right to market or receive gasoline from whomever it deems necessary --- not whatever is determined by a foreign imperialist power.

"Pa'fuera que van" (“They are going out”) is the cry of thousands of protesters against the government of Danilo Medina. Young people are leading the mobilizations, as they are in Chile and Colombia.

International corporations are trying to pillage Venezuelan oil, taking advantage of the economic catastrophe ravaging the country. Plans for privatization are supported by the Maduro government and the right-wing opposition.
