Many socialists are wondering where we go from here — what role can a revolutionary publication play?

Biden played a key role in empowering the ESMAD police force that is now being used to crush dissent in Colombia. This is all the more reason the U.S. Left must make solidarity with the Colombian working class a priority.

Biden’s first speech before Congress as President was a whirlwind of populist promises to raise living conditions for the worst off sectors of U.S. society and defend American interests abroad. The plans and priorities he presented show that the Biden administration and its allies are betting on a departure from traditional neoliberal approaches to ensure that the United States can claw its way out of its current political, economic, and social crises and rebuild itself in its own image as the undisputed imperialist powerhouse of the world.

On the sixth day of a strike of over 1,100 workers at the Warrior Met coal mines in Alabama, the union presented the rank and file with a tentative agreement from the company. The contract offers certain concessions, but does not address the central demands workers say they require before they come off the picket lines.

Bessemer, Alabama’s police chief has confirmed that off-duty officers have been hired by Amazon to act as “security” for the BHM1 facility in the middle of a historic and intense union drive. Biden’s first foreign policy speech has been hailed as a breath of fresh air after four years of Trump’s boorish approach, but if we look beneath Biden’s empty rhetoric, his task as president is no different than Trump’s: restoring U.S. imperialism to its former glory. Will a return to traditional neoliberal foreign policy be enough?

Some 1,400 workers at Hunts Point Terminal Market in the Bronx --- the largest wholesale produce market in the world --- are on strike, demanding wage increases and better health benefits. Refusing to back down even in the face of police repression and threats from management, the Hunts Point strike serves as an example to the entire labor movement of how to fight the attacks of the bosses and the government officials who protect their interests.

The bipartisan regime is using impeachment to move against Trump in the days after the storming of the Capitol. But that doesn’t mean they are our allies in the fight against the Right. Socialists must prepare ourselves and the entire working class to face the next four years of an administration that has the support of the bipartisan political establishment and capital behind it.

The world watched yesterday as a horde of extreme-right Trump supporters stormed the joint congressional session to certify Joe Biden’s electoral win. These events portend more instability for the U.S. imperialist project, both on the national and international stages.

What part can a revolutionary publication play in the fight for socialism today?

As votes for the 2020 elections were counted for a third night across the country, protesters in New York City were met once again with violent repression by NYPD. Acting on the orders of Mayor Bill de Blasio, the police are cracking down on mobilizations to prevent a repeat of this summer's uprising.

The right to vote may not be enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, but voter suppression is.

Stripped of political theater, the final debate of the 2020 presidential election showed clearer than ever before that Donald Trump and Joe Biden want to present themselves as candidates of bourgeois “stability.” Though they differ in tactics, their responses showed that they share a vision of shoring up U.S. capitalist interests and revitalizing the decaying U.S. imperialist regime — and that they are more than willing to sacrifice the working class and oppressed across the world to do it.

At the first presidential debate, Donald Trump made an explicit call to his right-wing base to “watch very carefully” at the polls --- a clear euphemism for voter intimidation. If the right-wing mobilizes on Election Day, then the working class must be prepared to protect its democratic rights.

Though there is a growing movement from rank-and-file members to disaffiliate cops from unions, the leaders of the U.S.’s largest unions defend cops’ right to organize alongside workers. Both the union bureaucracy and cop “unions” are means by which the capitalist state maintains control over working class organizations. Mobilizing the power of the working class against police terror and capitalist exploitation requires confronting these two enemies of the working class.

On the final night of the RNC, amid protests outside the White House, Trump and his parade of supporters painted him as a figure of stability in a chaotic political and economic landscape. Calling this election the “most important election in the history of our country,” Trump presented himself as the only solution to the many challenges facing the U.S. --- from coronavirus, to China, to Joe Biden and the radical left.

On August 26, in a sweeping act of solidarity with the anti-racist movement, athletes across the country walked off courts and fields, halting over a dozen professional games in basketball, baseball, and soccer. These solidarity strikes are one more expression of the widespread and growing rage against institutional racism and police terror that has driven the movement in the streets for the past three months.

Tens of thousands of rank and file workers participated in the Strike for Black lives on July 20. The nationwide action marked an advance in the labor movement’s participation in the nationwide uprising against the current crisis and systemic racism, but it also showed the clear limitations of union leaderships’ collaboration with politicians and their unwillingness to tap into the true power of the working class.

A growing rightward reaction to BLM protests has sparked “Blue Lives Matter” protests attracting cops and right-wing supporters. Counter-protesters have been met with violence from both the NYPD and the pro-police demonstrators. These confrontations represent a re-escalation of repression by Democratic politicians to both sway public opinion against the protests and try to regain some of the legitimacy lost by the police since the movement against racism and police brutality began.

The pandemic and economic crisis is raging through regions ill-equipped to control the outbreak after years of neoliberalism and U.S. imperialism. Capitalist governments have proved that the only solutions they can offer will come with deep attacks on the living conditions of workers and oppressed people. As a united working class, we must counterpose our own solutions. In the U.S., that begins with the fight against imperialism. 

We are in the midst of widespread uprisings against racist state violence, led by a vanguard of Black youth. With more and more young people pushing forward and leading social movements, working class  youth must ensure  our movements don’t fall away or be co-opted by the Democratic Party. We need to create a political party of our own, one that has the youth united with the working class to take the fight directly to the capitalist system.

In a historic work stoppage on Juneteenth, members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) are leading a day of action that will shut down 29 ports along the West Coast in solidarity with the movement against police terror across the country.

In solidarity with uprisings across the United States, protesters returned to the streets of Paris and other French cities this Saturday to demonstrate against racist police terror. Mobilizations continued throughout the day amid police protests and right-wing demonstrations.

Protesters across the U.S. are calling to defund the police. But even as this progressive slogan is being chanted in the streets, it is also already in danger of being co-opted by politicians looking to pacify the movement. How should socialists relate to this demand? 

With the uprising against police brutality at a decisive turning point, the largest socialist organization in the U.S. --- the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) --- can play a significant role in fueling the momentum of the movement and pushing its demands forward. But it has to make significant changes in its strategy first.
